The social media course was very exciting. It was an engaging course taught by, Centennial College`s faculty member, Dr.Jessica Langer. At first, I thought it would be an easy course, due to being a major social media user. However, during the course, I have come to realise that social media is a vast discipline. It’s a discipline that doesn’t just analyze ordinary users like me, but also business users. During the course, I also learned about a sophisticated analytical tool called, Meltwater. As well, via the course, I got to meet cool industry people like, Daniel Reyes and Catherine Sugrue. However, despite being a pretty good and fascinating course, I also found it to be somewhat challenging.

To begin with, I loved, and thoroughly enjoyed the class. Additionally, I would like to mention positively, that my professor has always created a fun and captivating learning environment, where I have always learned something new. Some of these new things included the new knowledge of how the social media landscape is precious in creating a dialogue marketing and how algorithms work hand in hand to personalize everyone`s experience on social media. Secondly, I also enjoyed having industry guests from the DoTheDaniel Inc., come in to interestingly talk about how social media management and brand engagement are important in the social media world. Finally, I also enjoyed learning about Meltwater. Meltwater is an analytics tool, which is highly used in the PR industry to analyze the trends in social media and traditional media, to attain more success in the business world. Luckily, the BPRM program can access this tool, and in one of our lectures, we were able to have an amazing demo session with, Daniel Viron.

Feedback on the Course !!!

Despite, it being a fantastic class, I still feel that there could be some improvement. Honestly, the only thing that could be improved upon would be the in-class activities. Mainly, I discovered that writing was heavily used for a lot of the in-class activities. This can become somewhat overwhelming,  tedious and monotonous. Thus, to improve this, I would recommend that certain activities implement games and could be orally conducted.

Tbh, I can’t believe that the semester is almost finally over in a less than a week from now. I mean it just feels like as if yesterday, was the first day of the second semester. Overall, I had a very positive and joyful learning experience in Dr.Jessica Langer`s social media course. Finally, I would rate the experience, a 4 out of 5 stars, as we had a lot of discussions and some wonderful guests in the class.

After applying for many scholarships since November, I was emailed in late January by the college, to inform me that one of my application was accepted into receiving an entrance scholarship by the alumni association. By getting this email, I was ecstatic and proud to be receiving this prestigious award. Finally, in the email, it was interestingly mentioned that I would be invited to award nights at Centennial College`s Progress Campus, to celebrate this fantastic achievement.

Thus, on March 28th, 2017, at around 6:15, the beautiful night began with a great ambience and emceed by CBC News Network Anchor/Host of CBC News Now, Suhana Meharchand. Now, to celebrate this event with someone special, I attended this delightful event with my sister, Maizah Rana.  Luckily, I didn’t have to wait a long time to go on stage, because I was included in the first few awards.

After the first few awards had been announced, we were served our delicious and unique salad. It was made up of unusual ingredients like arugula, baby spinach, dried cranberry, pumpkin seeds, radicchio and honey lime dressing.

Next, we were creatively served wild mushroom risotto stuffed in pepper along with a vegetable bundle for the main course.

For the final dish, we were served a beautiful dessert that had a raspberry coulis decorating the dark chocolate and raspberry mousse, and was garnished with a mini vanilla macaroon.

This semester ,I am very lucky to have  4 day weekends. However, it comes with a catch, as I have a lot of early morning classes. As well, it was hard to choose a day, but I have decided to focus this post on Tuesday, as it is my busiest day.

An Overview on Mariam Rana`s Tuesdays

7:15 am – I wake up to get ready and dressed for college.

7:50 am – 8:20 am

My 30-min commute starts with me taking the 68 Warden bus which drops me off at the Warden subway station. From there, I take the subway to Pape Stn and then take the 81/25 bus to get to Pape Avenue at Mortimer Avenue. Finally, I quickly walk two-minute West on Mortimer Avenue, to quickly get to my statistics class.

8:30 am – 11:30 am

During this time, I learn a lot of interesting statistical and mathematical calculations with a very fantastic professor in the statistics course. Honestly, it’s not a very fun thing to do in the mornings, as it is mentally draining.

11:30 am – 2:30 pm

Treadmills in the Fitness Room.

Thankfully, we have a very long break to relax from the mentally draining math lecture I usually hang out in the library pillows to relax and catch up on a school assignment. During the break, I will go into the fitness room and enjoy a workout on the treadmills or bike for a 30 min.

2:30 – 5:30 pm.

After a long break, I have a social media class with an amazing professor. In this class, we learn all about how intriguing social media is and how we use it in the business world.

At around 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm, I leave the school, and begin my journey to go home. I take the 62 Mortimer bus, which conveniently has a stop in front of the college door. This bus then drops me off at the Main subway station. Finally, I use the subway to get off at Warden station and then take the 68 Warden bus that drops me near my house.

6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Finally, I eat my yummy dinner made by mom, check my emails and go on the school website to check or work on any projects.

At around 9:30 – Finally, after a very early and tiresome day, I doze off to sleep.

Out of all my lectures in the social media class so far, I have found week 3`s topic of the content ecosystem to really interesting. Thus, I have decided to write this week’s blog post on the lecture, itself.

In this lecture, we talked about how social and digital media interact, along with how content is created and disseminated online. I found these concepts to be interesting because, they relate to the everyday world of how online campaigns, websites, online businesses and nonsocial media website/platforms interact to have a relationship with their integrated social media platforms. As well, it was very thought-provoking to learn how digital media and social media are both deeply interconnected and make life more interactive because they both symbiotically rely on each other. Otherwise, the content ecosystem could fall apart.

An Illustration of the Social Media Landscape

Finally, just shortly before the break, we also explored the idea of how social media has changed the way things used to be marketed, as nowadays a lot of companies use dialogue marketing through different social media and digital channels.

Social Media Marketing

Then, we took a short break, where I decided to munch on some snacks and research more about these new concepts of digital and social communication/marketing. Thus, I found some intriguing research online, that is compiled in a list down below. Tbh, I would recommend readings recorded down below, for a deeper understanding of the concepts I am mentioning in this post.

The Research List Includes:

After our short break, we discussed the captivating implications of the quick dissemination (spread) of information in the social/digital world, because of how everything is incredibly interconnected and cyclic in this new digital age. Personally, I believe that dissemination in this new digital world can have both positive and adverse impacts depending on the situation. For example, raising awareness through the social media landscape about human’s rights issues, like raising awareness of less access to education for females in certain countries, that could then interest people into getting social active and making sure that everyone has access. Thus, the social ecosystem could bring benefits. However, the ecosystem in the landscape could also negatively lead to more stereotyping and bigotry against these individual countries. Finally, to finish up the lecture, we did an exciting activity where we had to create a social/digital campaign on the District 9 Advance campaign.  It was a great learning experience and gave us more practical knowledge on how the content ecosystem of digital and social communication/marketing could be interconnected to create interactive campaigns.

Being a student, can be a rewarding experience and at times challenging. I have been very fortunate to be learning from an institution, where the faculty are very supporting and dedicated to helping succeed students.

Mural on Media Communications !!!

In my first semester of college, I had a very diverse course selection of subjects like English, Intro to PR, Intro to Media, Intro to Business, and Intro to Marketing. While I enjoyed all the courses, I found certain courses like marketing and English to be more of a struggle, as naturally, I am not an incredibly great writer, and I find marketing to be a difficult discipline to comprehend due to the extensive amount of theories. Secondly, through the intro to PR course, I learned more about what PR is, and I got to discover the different tactics and strategies used in PR. I also liked the media course, because it had a lot of interesting media theories that I had never thought about and was an exciting course on how media is used in today`s world. Finally, I found the business class fun, because I learned in depth about the distinct types of businesses in the world and new business strategies. Finally, despite having some ups and downs in my classes, I successfully passed all my classes along with a high GPA (Grade Point Average).

While I enjoyed my classes and academically did well, I found that socially I didn’t have a very positive experience. This is because, I was purposely excluded, and treated with negative attitudes/behavior. Overall, there was a toxic environment created, that is still continued to this day, despite my efforts in trying to be a respectful and friendly person. This is somewhat detrimental to me because, I came from a high school where despite having differences and conflicts, there was a friendly environment. As well being an extroverted and social individual, I wanted to have a healthy social environment in a new place and create good personal relationships. However, unfortunately, things didn’t work out and alas socially speaking, I only have good working relationships with certain individuals.

Eye-catching Social Media Mural !!!

In this upcoming second semester, I have another set of new courses like, Organizational behaviour, Intro to Social Media, Writing for PR 1, Business Law, and Statistics. Tbh, I am excited about taking a class in social media, as I am an avid user of social media. I mean, most people nowadays are avid social media user, because that’s how we get most of our worldly information from, and it helps us to communicate/stay connected with people. As well, through the social media course, I am interested in learning how social media use of everyday people affects business and how companies use social media, as significant figures are using social media to become more successful. Secondly, I am excited to be taking organizational behaviour because I enjoy how the course deals and carefully examines the conduct of people in organizations, and how motivation, is necessary. Another thing I like about the organizational behaviour class is that we get to explore personality traits and how employers nurture self-concepts of their employees. Thirdly, I am excited to be taking the business law class, as I would like to see how the law and business are interconnected. I would additionally like to learn about how some of the laws affect ethics in business. Finally, I am a bit nervous for statistics, which is a course we must take due to our program being a management program. I am nervous because while I am good at math, I don’t like to do so much of it. Once again, I am very nervous for PR writing due to my weaker skill of writing, but I think that this course will be helpful in improving my writing skills and I look forward to seeing how writing is a fundamental aspect of public relations.

To conclude this off, I would like to add that I hope to do well this semester, learn some more new things and make some great memories.
